Kraftwerk's ninth studio album, released in November 1986, five-and-a-half years after the previous album, 'Computerwelt'. 'Electric Cafe' was delayed for several reasons, including Ralf Hütter's cycling accident in 1982. The album was originally to include the 1983 single 'Tour De France'.
As with all of Kraftwerk's studio albums from 'Trans Europa Express' (1977) onwards, 'Electric Café' was issued in English- and German-language versions. A Spanish-language version – the 'Edición Española' – was also available for a limited time. Unlike earlier albums, all versions of 'Electric Café' feature lyrics in several languages.
In 2009 a remastered version was released under one of the album's working titles, 'Techno Pop'. On this version the original 8:03 album version of 'The Telephone Call' was replaced by two tracks: the 7" mix of 'The Telephone Call' (3:50) and the remix 'House Phone' (4:57). Both had originally appeared on the single release of 'Der Telefon Anruf'.
Although Wolfgang Flür was a member of Kraftwerk until 1987, he did not perform on the album.
