About the Author

Dr. Loretta Johnson-Smith is a lover of creative expression. She enjoys using literacy and numeracy to inspire others. As a former math teacher, she has encouraged youth with fun, thought-provoking lessons. Dr. Loretta Johnson-Smith has now expanded her reach to outside the classroom by writing children's books that motivates children and youth. Her first children's book titled, First Black Girl, is a unique spin off of her dissertation research: Black Girl Magic: An Exploration of Spriituality in African-American Women in STEM. Both literary works highlights the accomplishments of Black women. It is through Dr. Loretta Johnson-Smith's creativity that she looks to bring cultural awareness, appreciation, and validation to young readers.
